Artform: Poetry

Augustine Obeng is a York University student pursuing an Honours Degree in Criminology and a Concurrent Bachelors of Education, while minoring in Theatre. Following his current studies, he plans to pursue his Masters in Education/Socio-legal Studies. He uses his talent as a poet to help young people find their voice through poetry.

At 23 years of age, Augustine has already encountered many difficult life experiences related to crime, violence, discrimination and inequality. After experiencing the loss of a close friend due to gun violence, Augustine began to focus his energies on positively contributing to the lives of young people in his community of Jane and Finch.

Augustine’s character, passion, heart, and enthusiasm for excellence have propelled him to where he is in life today as an ambassador for youth justice in organization such as the Youth Association for Academics, Athletics and Character Education, (Y.A.A.C.E.), and as a member of Nia Centre for the Arts’ Youth Steering Committee (A.F.R.O.). He has learned many of his leadership skills from playing basketball, having played competitively from elementary school all the way to the post-secondary level.
