Blowout Fest 2017

Celebrating

Culture

Down

To

Its

Roots

It is a year of celebration: Canada's 150th, Toronto Carnival's 50th, and this year marks the 1st annual Nia Centre for the Arts BLOWOUT FESTIVAL! Taking place during the Simcoe Day long weekend in Toronto (Friday, August 4 through Monday, August 7) the multi-day arts festival will celebrate black creatives and the African-Diasporic arts that Toronto has nurtured!

The weekend kicks off on Friday with a welcome reception, followed by a full Saturday of soca music, reggae riddims, and island vibes in the sun as we jump up with the Venom Carnival masquerade band on the parade route for Grand Carnival Day with the Peeks Toronto Caribbean Carnival in our special BOMBAX costume.

After the road, we have an amazing BLOWOUT SYMPOSIUM planned for Sunday featuring a unique carnival arts exhibit, the Toronto Urban Book Expo, live DJs, refreshments, and innovation at a free and family-friendly event.

On holiday Monday, we take the festivities outdoors for the BLOWOUT BLOCKO, where special guest artists will perform, we'll eat good food, shop from cultural vendors, and vibe to the best of Toronto's arts community. And if you have a costume from the parade on Saturday...it's your chance to wear it again for our special Carnival MondayLas Lap! The community blocko is free for everyone!

By highlighting the meaning of the holiday, along with providing a unique arts showcase, vendor booths, and interactive activities for people of all ages in celebration of this monumental year, we hope to also emphasize the historical meaning of the emancipation "John Simcoe" day, as well as the progress/impact black arts have made in Canada.

Join us as we celebrate culture, down to its roots!

More announcements to come in July, as we reveal our special guests and weekend features!
