Who We Are
Founded in 2009, Nia Centre for the Arts is a charitable organization that showcases and promotes arts from the African-Diaspora. We offer programs in music, photography, literature, the visual arts, theatre and interdisciplinary arts.
‘Nia’ is a Swahili word that means purpose and the organization supports people who have found their purpose in art. We create spaces to support young people and emerging artists to hone their artistic talents, prepare them for jobs in the creative sector and enhance their capacity for entrepreneurship. We also create opportunities for the community to experience the creative works of established artists through festivals, exhibitions and community arts programs.
To address the lack of safe and inclusive spaces for African-Canadian communities, we are building Ontario’s first and only multi-disciplinary facility dedicated to showcasing art from the African diaspora. Learn more about our capital project here.
